Ines’ Project Update

Under the aegis of the Lifespan and Digital Communication MA Program at Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA), graduate student Ines Petrovic-Mundzic is developing a positive communication and navigating cancer workbook. Ines is interested in understanding the role of positive communication in cancer management. She hopes that her project helps support individuals during and after the cancer diagnosis. As cancer diagnosis characterizes traumatic and challenging period in patients’ lives, Ines believes that is important to create a resourceful and adequate material that will help cancer patients and survivors harness communication resources to navigate their cancer experience. Besides creating traditional, print workbook, Ines hopes to create a positive Communication and navigating cancer workbook in a digital form that would allow easy access to its users.

Ines is originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina and she moved to the United States in 2009. She graduated from Old Dominion University in 2013 with a degree in Communication, and is currently pursuing her masters in Lifespan and Digital Communication Program. Ines is interested in health communication, as well as interpersonal area of communication studies. She is currently working at Old Dominion University as a Public Speaking Instructor. Besides professional interest, Ines also has a personal attentiveness in this project, as her mom is a breast cancer survivor.

Ines works on this project together with Dr. Tom Socha (advisor), as well as a committee that includes Dr. Gary Beck, Dr. David Metzger and Dr. Fran Hassencahl. Dr. Socha has been a leading in positive communication including publishing two books: The Positive Side of Interpersonal Communication (2012, Peter Lang International Publishers, Co-edited with Dr. Margaret Pitts, University of Arizona) and Positive Communication in Health and Wellness (Dr. Margaret Pitts and Dr. Thomas Socha, 2013 Peter Lang International Publishers). Also, Dr. Socha and Dr. Beck recently published another great resource titled Communicating Hope and Resilience Across the Lifespan (Dr. Thomas Socha and Dr. Gary Beck, 2015 Peter Lang International Publishers).
